The same 21cm column in ash stained black, matte rather than lacquered, so the grain still reads under the colour. The steel collar is the only bright thing on it.

Black hides pepper dust better than pale wood does, which matters more than it sounds if the mill lives next to the hob. It also marks less obviously when it gets knocked about.
