One mill, drawn straight

A plain column, a flat cap, one band of knurled steel at the neck. No crown, no turned rings, no badge. Eleven of them, in three heights and four finishes, made to our drawings rather than picked off a supplier’s sheet.

Four column mills in ash, black ash, steel and pine green on a kitchen worktop

Steel burr for pepper

Ceramic burr for salt

Six grind settings

Supplied empty

Ash cylinders at three stages on a turning bench: sawn blank, turned smooth, and one fitted with a knurled steel collar

Turned, then collared

The body starts as a sawn ash blank and comes off the lathe as a plain cylinder. The steel collar is pressed on last, which is the only assembly step that has to be tight rather than merely neat.

The collar is the grip

Knurled 304 steel, cut rather than rolled, so it still bites with oil on your hands. It is the one part of the mill we would not make cheaper, and the only thing on it that catches the light.

Shipping

$5.95 anywhere in the United States, typically 5–8 business days. $14.95 everywhere else. One rate per order, no surcharge for the tall mills. Mills go out within two business days, boxed with the burr already seated.

Returns

Thirty days, unused and unfilled. Once a mill has had salt or pepper through it we cannot resell it, so fill it after you have decided. Two years on the grinding mechanism.
